Do you experience unwanted facial hair or are you tired of shaving body hair every other day to stay smooth?
Many who tire of shaving have resorted to other hair removal methods like waxing, but did you know there is a variety of things that can go wrong with waxing? Anything from lifting or tearing of the skin, hair breakage, heat burns, and more can negatively alter a hair removal experience. This is why at Trinity Chiropractic we skip the wax and offer sugaring hair removal!
Our licensed esthetician is certified as a master sugarista with Tamara’s Professional Body Sugaring and specializes in Brazilians. Sugar paste is all natural and made of sugar, water, and citric acid and is applied to the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth and removed in the natural direction of hair growth. Because of this method of removal, hair breakage is less common and there is less discomfort in comparison to other hair removal methods. Think of it this way: when you are tweezing your brows, you pull the hair WITH the natural direction, right? Sugaring does EXACTLY that! Sugar paste only adheres to the hair and the dead skin cells, meaning lifting or tearing of the skin is nearly impossible and because the paste is only heated to a lukewarm temperature, it is very unlikely to get burned. This also means that sugaring is more gentle on the skin and is less uncomfortable than traditional waxing. Because sugar paste is able to seep into the hair follicle and lift the hair directly from the root, it is very common for hair regrowth to be significantly less even by just the second or third appointment, and regular services can even lead to permanent hair reduction. Less hair regrowth means less discomfort! Regular sugaring appointments occur every 3-6 weeks, and clients don’t typically even notice their hair begin to break the surface of the skin until about two weeks after their sugaring appointment. No more prickly, sharp hair regrowth!
To prepare for your first sugaring appointment, the hair needs to be about the length of a grain of rice. This is typically 1.5-2 weeks of growth. It is recommended to gently exfoliate the area of the body to be sugared 24-48 hours before your appointment, but never the day of. You can exfoliate using mechanical methods like a good scrub, exfoliating mitt, or loofah. Having freshly cleaned skin free of perfumes, deodorants, lotions and oils helps prep the skin to be pre-cleansed and then properly sugared. Following your sugaring appointment, it is recommended for clients to not go swimming, hot tubbing, or take baths (showers are fine) for 24-48 hours. It is also important to avoid activities that cause friction or sweating for 24-48 hours, including any exercise, yard work, and tight clothing. Please refrain from using perfumes, deodorants, lotions and oils on freshly sugared areas for 24 hours. Approximately 72 hours following your sugaring service, it is recommended to use a form of gentle exfoliation on the treated area. Easy and great forms of exfoliation include a sugar scrub (Tree Hut is my personal favorite) or a clean exfoliating glove or pad. Apply your method of exfoliation to the treated area and rub in gentle circle motions until the entire area is exfoliated. After this step, pat dry with a towel and it is best to apply a scent free lotion to the area to keep it moisturized. Repeat this exfoliation and moisturizing step at least once a week between appointments to help lift the growing hairs from the skin to prevent irritation, ingrown hairs, and allow for easier hair removal during appointments. It is also very important to not shave or trim between appointments!
Our sugarista uses two methods of sugaring based off of her analysis of your hair; sugar wax aka “strip sugar” and the traditional and popular form of sugaring aka “ball sugar”. The strip method is done with a softer sugar paste and removed with a cloth strip. This method is ideal for very fine hair or larger surface areas (legs, chest, back, etc.). The ball sugar is done with a gloved hand and “molded” to the skin to allow the sugar to seep into the hair follicles. After molding, the sugar is then “flicked” off of the skin using a swift wrist motion parallel to the skin, and this action is what quickly removes the hair from the skin. The ball sugar is ideal for all sugaring, and specifically thicker hair, coarse hair, stubborn hair, or clean-up. Immediately after being sugared, the esthetician will apply a warm damp towel to remove any sugar paste residue and to help soothe the area. Following the hot towel is a tonic water spray (unless the client is pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or is nursing) to further disinfect and tone the treated area, and a post-sugar unscented lotion and a soothing oil to calm and moisturize. The length of the sugaring appointment differs between body parts, but typically the average appointment doesn’t exceed 30 minutes for one sugaring service.
