I was just in a car accident. What now?

by | Jan 27, 2021

Screeching tires, crunching metal and shattering glass. It all happens so fast. One moment you are in traffic just like any other day and next, you are involved in a car accident. What do you do now?

If you needed to be taken to the emergency room following an accident, their job is to make sure you do not have any major or life-threatening injuries. They determine if you need to be hospitalized or not. If not, they typically give you something for the immediate pain and send you home with instructions to see someone for your injuries, often a chiropractor. A trip to the emergency room does not complete the care required to properly treat your injuries.

If you are lucky enough to not need emergency medical care, do not just go home and hope that the pain and soreness goes away on its own. Even seemingly minor collisions that do not result in major damage to your vehicle can cause significant injuries to your body. If not treated properly, injuries sustained in car accidents can turn into chronic problems that can plague you for the rest of your life.

When seeking treatment for your injuries, it is important to choose a chiropractor who has special training in properly handling personal injury cases. Because of the nature of the injuries and the different areas of the body that can be involved with a car accident, these cases can become quite complex. Sometimes, not all your injuries can be treated with chiropractic. A chiropractor that is experienced in handling these cases can help you get the proper care for all your injuries. For example, he may refer you to an orthopedist for wrist, shoulder, ankle or knee injuries; a neurologist if a concussion is suspected; and a trauma counselor for stress and anxiety resulting from the car accident, just to name a few.

When it comes to your chiropractic care, this commonly requires evaluation and treatment that is different than a typical chiropractic visit. Your chiropractor should take the time to thoroughly understand what happened in the car accident and what your symptoms and injuries are as a result. A thorough chiropractic, neurological and orthopedic examination must be done to determine what and how severe your injuries are. X-rays are commonly taken of the injured areas to rule out fractures, dislocations and possible ligament damage. Your treatment is often going to be more intensive and various therapies may be used in order to treat the pain and underlying soft tissue damage before it becomes a chronic problem. It is also important to strengthen the muscles that stabilize your spine to optimize your results long term.

At Trinity Chiropractic, Dr. David Iszler uses the latest chiropractic technique, called Torque Release Technique (TRT). With this gentle and specific neurologically based technique, Dr. Iszler adjusts your spine without the twisting and popping typically associated with chiropractic care. Let’s face it, if you have been in a car accident, you are probably already quite stiff and sore, and the thought of that cracking does not sound very appealing. With Torque Release Technique, you do not have to worry about that.

Based on your injuries, Dr. Iszler will tailor your treatment to fit your needs. He may initially use electrical stimulation and ice packs to decrease your pain and swelling. He also has deep tissue therapeutic laser to help with pain, inflammation and to accelerate your body’s natural healing process. Spinal decompression may be an option to treat disc injuries. Once your pain has decreased, you are ready for spinal rehabilitation. This helps to stretch and strengthen the muscles that support your spine, as well teaching your body to work properly. His goal is to get you back to doing the things you loved to do before your accident and not just treat your pain.

If you have been in a car accident, you may also need an attorney that specializes in personal injury. Just like choosing your chiropractor, this is not a decision you want to take lightly. You do not just want to pick the first name that you see in an internet search. If you do not know who to call to represent you, we can also provide you with a list of trustworthy attorneys to help narrow down your search.

Being in a car accident can be a very stressful and confusing time for you. We understand that and we are here for you. Call Trinity Chiropractic at 602-603-5444, and we can help you get on the road to recovery and back to doing what you love.
